My own Keith
Keith’s art makes me smile, raises my awareness regarding serious issues, and mesmerizes me with all the intricacies in his design. He started out in 1980-85 creating images in chalk by utilizing unused advertising panels that were covered in black matte paper, these images were throughout the New York subway system. He believed that the subway was his laboratory to work out ideas and experiment with simple lines.
He also made his artwork available to people by opening his Pop Shop in 1986, as an extension of his work. The shop was a NYC downtown attraction which carried affordable clothing and gift items for nearly 20 years, sadly closing in 2005. Fortunately, the Pop Shop is open online.
In New York, Keith mingled with many up and coming celebrities, graffiti artists, and musicians. He also got involved in the alternative art scene in NY downtown streets, clubs and art galleries.
Keith left this world too soon, scumming to AIDS in 1990 at the age of 31. Recently, there have been several fashion collaborations that continue to showcase Keith’s work and causes.
Lastly, my other little bit of Keith, a vintage Keith Haring Swatch watch. I was so excited when I bought it with my hard earned allowance!
